I have not clear what is the procedure for maintaining a response in gray, or to promote its author.
Until now I believed that when I reply to an aswer to a post of mine by a reader not yet authorized, it could only be authorized by me (as it would be logical) if I should click the star icon. My answer should not automatically make an author the person to whom I respond. But I responded to a gray without promoting him (or she or it), and later I saw then that he's now an author. This means that if a burner trashes me and I have no intention on earth of promoting him to the authorship status, he could however be promoted by his brother (for example) or by another idiot like him who has the status of an author? If indeed this is the case, it does not seem very fair.

First off, if s/he is an idiot and is grayed out, don't reply. Just dismiss.
With that said... Are you saying that you observed the individual in question to have gone from a grayed commenter to a commenter with full authorship privileges that made a post on the Oppositelock mainpage?
That can't actually happen.

As of right now, there appear to be slightly varied versions of the commenting system which exist in different spaces. I would guess that starting tomorrow the same commenting system will be rolled out to all spaces and it will behave consistently (let us hope). Right now, I have seen different behaviors in different environments.
The commenting system does rely on some trust in your fellow commenters.

Only mods can make people authors. Authors can make people not grey.
If someone is giving you shit, just dismiss the comments.
